Finding Peace on My Island: A Summer Reflection from St. Croix

Summer is here, and we are certainly feeling the heat on the island of St. Croix! With temperatures rising and hurricane season just around the corner, it’s a great time for islanders to hit the beach and take a dip in nature’s outdoor bathtub, the beautiful sea.

This is my go-to on weekends and whenever I get a chance for grounding, resetting intentions, and just breathing in the fresh air! We are so lucky to live on an island that is so bountiful with nature! There really is nothing like it to ease stress and rejuvenate the spirit.

And the way the world is going these days, we all need a little R&R, self-care, and often solitude with the birds, the trees, and the breeze to refresh ourselves. As I was walking the beach with my dogs this afternoon, I thought about the idea that ‘we are each our own islands’ in a way. What we focus on in our day-to-day and in our daydreaming is what becomes our story and the frame through which we view the world and our daily lives. There is so much magic, abundance, and love around us and within each of us, yet too often we get lost in the hustle, fear, and lack mentality that permeates the world news and the stories that run in our minds.  It can be overwhelming to say the least. And though we all want to stay aware and involved, I have found that tuning out, spending time in nature, and going within to ‘my own little island’ is not only satisfying but can bring much needed solace and peace.

On “my island,” the trees speak to me, the sea is my spa, and grasshoppers can become magical friends bearing life messages. If you haven’t had a chance to check out my recent books, Grassy the Grasshopper and Grassy the Island Grasshopper coloring book, you can find them on Amazon.  I couldn’t help but share my own true story of having the unexpected blessing of a pet grasshopper and I really enjoyed writing his story. Both books are fun, simple, and so perfect for packing in your beach bag. Whether you have kids in the family to share with, or you just want to tap into that magic yourself, Grassy’s story is truly one of a kind. 💚 If one tiny grasshopper could impact me so much, imagine what wonders there are to be seen, if we only take the time to feel into the energy of all of the nature around us.

On another note, and speaking of ‘the news’ 😊, our local ‘coconut 🥥 express’ 🏝️  has been spinning some interesting stories, too! I’ve run into many clients and friends over the past months who have heard all kinds of things about my whereabouts! Some of my favorites include sailing the Mediterranean on my private yacht, as well as having moved to the South Pacific islands where I am now writing books from my treehouse! 💜 While these are all great stories and certainly options for me to consider, lol. I am pleased to say that I am currently residing on St. Croix and continue to see clients and four-legged patients 🐾 by appointment, Monday-Thursday, at the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center outpatient veterinary clinic.

Since closing my long time private veterinary practice, Sugar Mill Veterinary Center, almost a year ago now, I’ve managed to fit in some international traveling (and yes, surfing too!) as well as most recently move house – lots of change in a short period of time- so I can imagine the storytelling grapevine. Through it all, though, I have continued to serve the St. Croix community animals with my veterinary work. And there is nothing that makes me happier and more satisfied than being engaged and passionate about how I am spending my time on this island and on the planet.

I’ll be sure to keep you all posted as my adventures continue, and I thank you so much for all the love and support. Until next time, stay blessed, stay cool, stay safe, and sending all peace, love, and light always.
